American Dance Abroad

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The time has come to sunset American Dance Abroad. ADA has been an important international program, and we are grateful for the extraordinary artists, cultural ambassadors, and supporters who have been the pillars of this endeavor. Acknowledging the shifts in philanthropic support that have been critical to our work, we have made the difficult decision to conclude the programs and initiatives of American Dance Abroad. However, our mission will continue through Performing Arts Strategies, the parent organization of American Dance Abroad. Performing Arts Strategies will archive what we accomplished with our programs and projects and offer an analysis of what we learned with American Dance Abroad, with the hope that others will use what we learned and continue the important work of international cultural exchange. The ADA archive will launch in 2025 and will be housed on the Performing Arts Strategies website.

As we reflect on the incredible voyage we embarked upon 13 years ago, we recognize the impact that ADA’s many events, activities and outreach had on American artists. The programs were designed in response to the core need – to expand the possibilities for American dance artists internationally. Over the years, American Dance Abroad has had the privilege of serving over 200 remarkable American artists and close to 100 international programmers, fostering dynamic relationships and creativity that transcend borders. Beyond performances, what truly defines the essence of American Dance Abroad are the relationships that blossomed and have been sustained. Artists connected not only through their craft, but also through the shared language of passion, imagination, and understanding. The threads of professional friendship woven during these exchanges will forever bind us across continents.

Our program leaves behind a legacy that is not just about the art, but also about the profound impact it can have on fostering understanding and unity among diverse cultures. To all the artists who contributed their talent, passion, and spirit to this international journey, thank you for making ADA a beacon of creativity and connection. Your art has touched hearts and bridged gaps, leaving an indelible mark on the cultural landscape. To all the programmers who welcomed us and the American dance community into your theaters, festivals, and meetings, thank you for your openness and willingness to collaborate and work together.  We hope you have learned as much from us as we learned from you.

As we bid farewell to this chapter, we raise our voices in a collective cheer for the magic of dance and performance that knows no boundaries. The stages of the world are vast, and though American Dance Abroad may sunset, the results of our shared experiences will continue to illuminate the tapestry of humanity.

With heartfelt gratitude and fond memories,
